NZ Certificate in Music

The NZ Certificate in Music is a practical music course that exposes students to a wide variety of music genres and is designed to develop their experience and practice in music. Students will develop skills in music composition, group and solo performances, studio recording and mixing techniques.

Students will discover career opportunities in the performing arts and learn how to promote themselves within the music industry. This Certificate acts as a pathway on to higher study in music, specifically the Diploma in Contemporary Music or Bachelor of Music.

Fundamentals of Music 1

  • Improve your ability to read, write and play music in the style of your choosing.

Fundamentals of Music 2

  • Compose and arrange music for live performances.

Music Production & Technology

  • Learn live sound production along with studio recording, programming, editing and mixing techniques.

Professional Practice

  • Discover career opportunities in performing arts. Learn how to create a marketing plan and generate an EPK (Electronic Promotional Kit) for the purposes of promoting yourself in the music industry.


  • Write and perform original pieces of music in your chosen genre.

Ensemble 1

  • Learn about trends in contemporary genres and artists from the 1960’s to today. As a group, arrange and perform pieces of music from these eras.

Ensemble 2

  • As a group, arrange and perform pieces of music from a chosen era and genre.

New Zealand Certificate in Music (Level 4)


Domestic Students

  • Be a minimum of 16 years old and hold NCEA Level 1, or be a mature student aged over 20
  • Have received some music training in an instrument or voice
  • Students will be required to produce two referee reports and complete a pre-audition form
  • Be interviewed and auditioned
  • Provisional Entry may be granted to domestic applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed and are able to show they are well prepared to study the programme

International Students

  • International students must be at least 18
  • International students for whom English is a second language must have an IELTS score of 5.5 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.0, or a recognised equivalent test

Our Music programme requires you to bring your own device (BYOD) for study at Vision College.
Below are the minimum specifications required for this course, anything less than this will not open the programmes required.

Career Opportunities

Musician - Kaiwhakatangitangi

Musicians write, arrange, conduct, and perform musical compositions.

Sound Technician - Kaihangarau Oro

Sound technicians record and mix sound for radio, film, television and other media.

Private Teacher/​Tutor - Kaiako Whaiaro

Private teachers/tutors teach a specific skill or subject to individuals or small groups of children or adults.
